Our History

It represents members and students in more than 80 countries, providing qualifications for those wishing to work in financial management and accountancy and continuous professional development for qualified Financial Accountants. The Institute sets technical and ethical standards for its members. The Institute is an Associate Member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) - the global body setting professional standards and regulating accountants around the world.
About the IFA
The ethos of the IFA is to put small and medium businesses(SMEs) first. These businesses are the life blood of the national economy, employing over half of Britain’s private sector workforce.
Generating employment and wealth for the local community, small and medium sized enterprises are crucial to the financial success of both urban and rural areas across the country. Supporting the professionals who run and work for SMEs is part of the remit of professional membership institutions such as The Institute of Financial Accountants .
The IFA qualification of ‘Incorporated Financial Accountant’ provides anyone working as a professional accountant, particularly in new and expanding SMEs, with access to a reliable and well-recognised professional body. Membership is equally appropriate to employed and self-employed accountants.
With members and students in over eighty countries, the Institute has been providing professional accountancy examinations and membership since 1916 and is today a truly ‘international’ organisation. Put simply, we support Professional Financial Managers in SMEs.
