Dan,
I was quite surprised by both our phone conversation on [INSERT DATE] and
your e-mail.
First, I am not interacting with you as a private consultant but rather as
a colleague from Equal Brighton & Hove. I have moved from BCP over to the
Core Team who are employed through BHCC which is your employer. I did
not ask you to keep me informed, as in you should call me whenever you
have a piece of information. That would be unrealistic. Rather, I meant
that I'd appreciate it if you would share information with me that may be
pertinent to the work I am doing. We're all trying to achieve the same
goals and sharing information is vital to all of us.
Second, you're mistaken when you say that I haven't spoken with funders. I
regularly speak with people from the council, JCP and LSC. Many funders
sit on the WFD/EE Group which I report to. You sit on that group. I
don't just go off and do something. I've discussed what Engage was doing,
and in particular, what was being done about the H&S issue with that
group. No one made any objections to the contrary. Mike Blythman
attended the Engage meeting where the pilot was discussed and supported it
fully and was glad that a potential solution to the H&S Checklist issue
was found.
Third, I am still unclear as to what 'contact centre' you referred to in
this e-mail. I've spoken with Mike Blythman (a funder and clearly someone
who would be interested in this information) and he's unaware of a
'contact center' in development. I am aware of the H & S Central Vetting
Service Project Group as I am a member. Is this what you are referring
to? If so, it's noted in Paul Mitchell's e-mail of [INSERT DATE]
distributing the minutes that you and [INSERT HER NAME] would be keeping
the rest of the group informed. Will this still happen? If this is not
the 'contact centre' you are referring to, please advise as to who is
leading on this, who the partners are, and how I can stay informed.
Fourth, my project, as an Equal-funded project, has certain goals it must
meet by 31 December 2007. Dealing with the issues brought up by group
members is part of my remit. The H&S issue has been one that Engage has
been working on for some time. Solutions that are proposed for the future
do not meet the group's needs right now. The solution we've decided to
implement should not in any way impact any future work in this area. In
fact, the building of trust amongst organisations that will occur as a
result of implementing our H&S Checklist pilot should only help to make
future information sharing easier. It also should provide some lessons
learnt that could inform any future project.
Fifth, I do not appreciate being spoken to in an antagonistic manner,
either on the phone or by e-mail. This is not the first time this has
happened. You previously did this on + and then e-mailed me to apologise.
I would appreciate it if we could our interactions professional.

Claire,
As well as saying that i should keep you informed (which as a private
consultant i think is a little rich) i think that you should try running
past things to people who actually control funding and its flow
(LSC/CYPT/JCP) before instigating something that might actually go against
a potential wider pilot that is being developed by LSC etc.
FYI - There is a move to develop a 'contact centre' across Sussex for this
type of EE/H&S activity and indeed some discussions about the contracts
that Engage members and other placement services to see if a local clause
can be inserted in future contracts that enforce the use of said centre
for
all publically funded contract, via a levy system - starting with the
Apprenticeship and Work Based Learning Providers.
Perhaps if you checked first with others engaged in negotiations (other
than Paul) these things could be imparted to you to consider?????
I don't pretend to know everything but it is worth checking in with the
funders first i would say!
Regards
Dan
