Mixin
(Various Artists)
Beats and bass-lines abound, linking a roster going through jazz-poetry
via soul-vocal to dubby trip-jazz features on this collection. A selection
of producers/musicians the like of which is hard to find all jostling
for space on one album..... ‘mixin’....one word says it
all as indeed this album is a true mix of styles all unified by a
loose jazz ingredient. |
THE
ARTISTS |
|
|
Rudiment
is born out of jazz and reggae and all kinds of other stuff. most
of all though, it's about stripping everything right back to basics
and adding only the freshest musical herbs and spices in just the
right amounts. listen to the track and you'll hear all the flavours
they have soaked up - name checking artists from their record collections
is unnecessary. a pinch of organ, a few morsels of electric piano
and a delicious coating of woodwinds on a deep crust of drums and
bass. some would put it in the trip-hop bag but they have no love
of categories ..... file under 'good music' |

|
Lefroy's
poetic prose calls to mind jazz poets such as gil scott-heron, jack
kerouac and early leonard cohen - he is all of these and yet none
of these. This mixture of lefroy's poetry and Geoff Woolley's musical
capabilities allows the words to lie on a bed of straight ahead grooves
interlaced with melodic patterns creating a melting pot of styles
reflecting current European culture. There is no politics in this
music, only observation. over and above this comes a sense of optimism
- the words ask only questions and can provide no answers .......
light the blue touch paper and stand well back! |

Sugartrain
dish up up-tempo soul/jazz/funk based songs with traces of r+b, hip-hop
and some secret ingredients that make that Sugartrain sound. Jesse's
credentials are about a mile long (so they won't be listed here!)
and include working with luminaries such as Omar. Alongside his proficiency
on bass, drums, guitar and piano are his considerable production talents.
Jesse has used these to great effect in the house and techno scene
collaborating with, amongst others, Jo Boggiest of Technotronic, but
his love of soul, jazz and funk has stopped him straying too far in
these areas. Featured vocalist on "all I ask" is one Angie
Cheung who co-wrote material for the brand new heavies album "brother,
sister". these are some damn good songs as one spin round the
earlobes will tell you ... these are the facts, listen and digest |

Ultravibe
is a blossoming sound lurking in the undergrowth with a Latin touch
from a south American jungle - one bite from this creature and you
can't help but dance and beware, it's highly contagious! on this project,
Jesse's production skills reach an all time high and on "the
theme from Ultravibe" especially, we know he'll bring you right
up there with him. Jesse's experience of dance music over the last
few years fused with his strong songwriting ability have created some
of the catchiest dance tunes you'll ever hear with just enough jazz
to snare even the choosiest of species ....... catch this one if you
can! |

Kalei
da scope (now K-Scope)
No instrument or musical form can be discounted and as soon as one
project is finished another is started, taking a new path in a new
direction. do not expect to hear everyday styles which stagnate but
timeless colourful atmospheric soundscapes and strong rhythmic patterns.
Kalei da scope's music is here and now, music for the moment and beyond
this, description is pointless ....... constantly changing and beautiful. |
