Pam subsequently became and specialised as a Freelance Moving and Handling Trainer and Consultant in 1992 where she organises bespoke training courses for the private sector (mainly nursing and residential homes and private care agencies); advises The Commission for Social Care Inspection and Social Services Contracts Departments; acts as a consultant in personal injury litigation involving moving and handling issues; organises courses for Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists in risk management and patient handling issues. She works as a trainer and consultant for an Education Authority and runs courses for all staff including caretakers, administration staff and support workers. Pam now employs a team of professional trainers. She has presented sessions at National and International conferences on moving and handling issues.
Pam advises on moving and handling equipment design and development of training programmes for Sunrise Medical and Prism Medical, both of whom make and supply patient handling equipment for nursing homes and hospitals. She has been working extensively with these companies in the USA, Canada and UK to help train sales teams in basic ergonomics, equipment use and good practice. Pam presented a session at the USA National Patient Handling Conference in February 2006 and again in February 2007. Pam also presented a session at an international conference for Nursing and Residential Care Concerns in Malta 2007. Pam has developed a hoist identification tool with others that is now widely used in nursing homes and hospitals.
Pam also carries out ergonomic work station assessments and advises on injury management in the workplace and has written and launched a new Manual Handling Risk management course, which she presents exclusively around the UK on behalf of the Organisation for Chartered Physiotherapists in Private Practice.
Pam has recently participated in the review and updating of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy’s Manual Handling Guidance as part of the External Review Group.
Pam has written an article “Assuring Patient Dignity during Patient Handling Tasks” that is awaiting publication in the US journal Rehabilitation Nursing.
Pam has attended courses in legal report writing and courtroom skills organised by both Bond Solon and “In Practice” by Radcliffes Le Brasseur for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
