Five Day - Trainers' Programme

The moving and handling trainers programme is for people wanting to teach moving and handling skills and principles within their place of work and carry out more detailed and effective moving and handling risk assessments. On completion of the course the participant would be able to teach both induction moving and handling training to new staff members and update training to existing staff members.

Prior to beginning the five-day training programme the potential trainers must;

Have volunteered for the post with the agreement of their Manager

Be very experienced in the field and have recently been employed in a ‘Hands on’ capacity in their field

Be physically capable of demonstrating good practice

Have background knowledge of the minimum care standards required in their area of work

Have sufficient status and administrative skill to be able to influence organisational change

On completion of the course when a standard of knowledge and delivery MUST have been achieved the trainers must;

Promote service user independence and dignity, minimal lifting, use of equipment and ergonomic changes to minimise
risk to staff

Be able to demonstrate knowledge of relevant legal influences in the field

Show an understanding of the ergonomic principles involved, and of the risk assessment processes required

Demonstrate a practical approach to moving and handling issues

Show they have the ability to work in a team with leadership and communication skills

Demonstrate they have the necessary skills to pass their knowledge on to others

Attend a 2-day annual update as well as maintaining regular contact with Pamela Rose Associates

Ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the programme

During the five-day course all trainers receive a standard trainers’ pack of information and comprehensive publications lists as evidence of their course content. They receive extensive knowledge and practical application of moving and handling equipment including a large variety of hoists and slings.

The trainers have access to sample packs of handouts, which can be given to all trainees during their induction day. Each teaching session should be held in a suitably equipped training room with a bed, hoist and other small equipment together with teaching aids.

Each trainer should keep very careful records of their training in terms of timing, content, handouts, demonstrations and practice time, together with sample scenarios of problem solving sessions. Both the trainers and the managers keep copies of all training sessions.
