From the fateful voyage of the Titanic
to the Pilgrim Fathers who left here for America, Southampton
has many important places in the history books.
The medieval town walls are some of the
best preserved in the UK, with 13 of the original 29 still standing.
You can Walk the Walls by following the signs around the City,
taking in the Museum of Archaeology found in God's House Tower
which is part of the City's defences. Southampton's Maritime
Museum is located in The Wool House which was built as a warehouse
for the medieval wool trade. Here you can find out about the
real story of the Titanic and read survivors stories.
Southampton City Art Gallery houses 2,700 works of art that
were created over six centuries.
It has been designated by the Government as a museum of national
importance and is one of the finest collections in the country.
Other art collections in Southampton include the Millais Gallery
at Southampton Institute and the John Hansard Gallery at Southampton
University. There are also commercial art galleries if you wish
to buy art for yourself.
